Only to 뜻, only to find

"only + <to + VERB>" 구조는  부정적이거나, 놀라운 것, 또는 방금 말한 것과
반대되는 것 , 또는 행동에 관련된 사람들의 기대와 어긋나는 것을 도입하기 위해 사용되는 특별한 구조입니다.
이걸 이해하려고 할떄 번역하려고 하거나 " only"라는 일반적 영어 사전 정의를 사용하려고 해서는 안됩니다.
이것은 일반적인 의미에 맞지않기 때문입니다.

일반적인 공식은 다음과 같습니다.
"X did Y, only to do Z, " 
여기서 Z는 예상치 못한것, 예기치 못한 것입니다. 
이 구조에 익숙해지려면 예시를 여러개 보는 게 좋습니다.

We rushed to the store, only to be told when we got there that the iPhone 5s were all sold out. 

(부정적이고 예상치 못한 결과: 아이폰이 매진됬습니다.)

They were excited to read in the newspaper that the President was going to be visiting their city, only to find out later that the visit had to be canceled because of security concerns.

(1번째 문장에서 이야기 된것과 반대의 결과, 예기치 못한 결과 : 대통령이 못 온다는 것)

I thought I did really badly on the physics exam, only to learn when the results were posted that I had got a B+. 

(놀라우면서, 예기치 못한 결과, b+를 받았다.)

She finally fell asleep around midnight, only to be awakened by the ringing of the phone five minutes later. 

(예기치 못한결과.)

 

only to find 

 

그렇다면 이것은 무슨뜻 인가요?

결국 위와 같은 뜻입니다. 

 

I tried calling you tonight only to find that I was not allowed to make that call.
~ 하려고 했는데 ~~ 했다는 걸 알았다. 라는 뜻이됩니다.

결국 앞의 예상과 반대가 되었다는 겁니다.

 

이 뜻을 한국어로 해석하려고 한다면 "결국 ~ 했다." "그러나 ~했다" 로 하시면 됩니다.

하지만 왠만하면 해석을 하려고 하지않았으면 좋겠습니다. only to 가 나오면 해석이아니라

예기치 못한 결과가 나오겠구나 이정도만 파악하시면 됩니다.
