한국어로 해석하는 데에는 다음과 같이 해석하시면 편합니다.

Not A until B : B 하고 나서야 A 했다.

Not until B that A : B하고 나서야 A 했다.

 

도치 시 Not until B did ~~

 

 

* until ~ :까지
여기서 '~ 까지'라는 뜻은 딱 그 순간 전까지라는 뜻입니다.
예를 들면 The shop will close until next Monday.
'그 가게는 다음 주 월요일까지 닫아.' 한국어로는 마치 월요일까지 포함하는 것 같으나.
실제로 until Monday는 Monday라는 순간 전까지 라는 뜻이다. 그러니 일요일까지 닫는다는 것이므로
즉 월요일에는 가게가 연다고 보시면 됩니다.

She couldn't leave the class until she was finished with her test 

 

그녀는 떠날 수 없었어. /( 테스트를 마치는 순간 전까지) 떠날 수 없었는데 그 기간이 언제까지냐면 그녀가 테스트를 마치는 순간 전까지 쭈욱 떠날수 없었다는 것.

→ It was not until she was finished with her test that she could leave the class.

 

그것은 (she was finished with her test) 전까지 쭉 'Not'(이루어질 수 없었다.) / 여기서 그것은 'That'절을 말한다.

아마 영어권 사람들의 사고는 우리와 다르기 때문에 이런 순서가 아닐까 싶다.

다만 우리나라로 의역하게 되면 ' 그녀가 테스트를 마친 후에야 떠날 수 있었다.'가 되겠지..

→ Not until she was finished with her test did she can leave the class

 

 

His father didn't come home from work until 5:00. 

→ It wasn't until 5:00 that his father came home from work.

→ Not until 5:00 did his father come home from work.

She didn't feel hungry until dinner time 

→ It was not until dinner time that she felt hungry.

→ Not until dinner time did she feel hungry.

He didn't go swimming until summer. 

→ It was not until summer that he went swimming.
