1. 세미콜론(;)

: the punctuation mark , that is used to separate major parts in a sentence and to separate items in a series if the items contain commas (출처 :네이버 사전)

세미콜론에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.

세미콜론은 다음과 같은 3가지 정도의 용도로 쓰입니다.

 

 

 

①  특정 목록 안에서 쉼표를 포함한 항목들을 구분할 때 도움이 됩니다.

     말로는 어려우니 한 가지 예시를 들어보겠습니다.

 

 

나무 위키에서 문장을 가져와 봤습니다.

 

The people were Jamie, John and George.

그 사람들은 제이미, 존, 조지였어.

 

그런데 만약에 여기에 미사여구를 붙인다면 어떻게 될까요?

이것을 영어로 표현한다면 다음과 같이 되겠죠

 

The people were Jamie, a man from New Zealand, John, the milkman's son, and George, a gaunt kind of man with no friends.

 

어떤가요? 미사여구가 붙은 문장은 구별하기가 더 어렵지 않을까요? 

이런 곳에서 세미콜론을 사용할 수 있습니다. 

 

The people were Jamie, a man from New Zealand; John, the milkman's son; and George, a gaunt kind of man with no friends.

 

이문장에서 세미콜론은 각 단어에 설명해놓은 미사여구까지 포함해서 구별하기 쉽게 해 놓았습니다. 

같은 문장이지만 구별하기가 더 쉬워진 걸 볼 수가 있습니다.

② 관계가 있는 두 독립절의 문장에서  ' 콤마 + 등위 접속사' 대신에 쓰입니다. 

 

두 개의 독립절 사이에 쓰일 수 있습니다. 
여기서 세미콜론은 문장 사이를 분리해두는 역할을 할 수도 있고
두절 사이의 관계를 더욱 강조를 하는 역할도 할 수 있습니다.

참고로 등위접속사란 (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet)를 말합니다.
몇 가지 예를 살펴보시죠

 

 

I bought some food, because Pork, cabbage, and fish were on sale.

 → I bought some food; Pork, cabbage, and fish were on sale.

 

He finished all his work, but she did not finish hers.

 

→ John finished all his homework; Kathleen did not finish hers.

 

여기서 콤마와 but을 세미콜론으로 대체할 수 있습니다. 왜냐면 굳이 접속사 없이도
두 개의 절의 관계가 명백하기 때문입니다.


세미콜론은 다음과 같이 종속절에 쓰여서는 안 됩니다.

틀림 : Although he is a kind ; the new guy is not. (X)

맞음 : Although he is a kind , the new guy is not. (O)

③ 세미콜론은 접속부사, 전환 어구( that is, for example, for instance, therefore, however, thus, furthermore, otherwise, accordingly, besides 등)로 시작하는 문장과 다른 문장 간 사이의 기간, 즉 어떤 시간 흐름을 유기적으로 연결해줄 때 쓰입니다. 한글로 표현하려니까 어렵네요 

 

예시를 보시는게 더 이해가 빠를것 같습니다.

 

Cathy worked for many hours on all her assignment; nevertheless, she was unable to finish it.

John is a good driver; moreover, he is a friendly one.

Cathy finished reading a novel this week; in contrast, Joan did not finish.

The first speaker was both professional and entertaining; nevertheless, the full program was disappointing. 

The annual report was critical of budgetary spending; as a result, the department made  the following recommendations.
